Rediscover this 100 year old hotel in the heart of Hari Hari
Nestled in the heart of a quaint little town on the west coast of New Zealand lies this iconic building dating back to the early 1930's. In the time of horse and cart, this glorious hotel was the hive of activity. It's seen many a late night party and had several owners, with the most notorious being Dominion Breweries (DBNZ).
In 1973, DB extended the hotel accommodation and, funnily enough, catered for the drinkers of that era by installing bottle openers on the vanity unit in each new ensuite room they built. Those bottle openers are still there to this day and quite a talking point for the new generation of tourists that come through Hari Hari and wonder at the reason behind an enormous hotel gracing the landscape of such a small town. The locals revel at the chance to engage in conversation that dates back to 'Grandad's Day'.
But that's not the only thing that's made Hari Hari popular and famous.
In 1931 on January 7th, a daring young pilot ventured out in his small plane, the Southern Cross Junior, and flew the coop from Australia landing 12 hours later upside down in a Hari Hari cow paddock. The locals were in awe at what had just fallen from the sky and came in droves from far and wide to inspect.
The pilot, Guy Menzies, mistook the La Fontaine swamp for a suitable landing field and made headlines news worldwide as well as becoming an overnight hero for the folks on the west coast.
So, as you can see, there's more to Hari Hari than meets the eye so take some out one day and venture on down this way and grace us with your presence.
